BOOK REVIEW
Buckle up and hold onto your Stetson—too much? Forgive me,
It’s rodeo season here in Houston. Now, Sean
Bridges’ Gunbarrel Highway was a very pleasant surprise. The story reads
like a high-stakes thriller. Burning rubber across the Lone Star State with a
million-dollar bounty, a desperate fugitive, and a cast of trigger-happy
hunters looking to cash in.
When Claudia Grant, a Texas trophy wife with more privilege
than common sense, dies in a car accident, the man in the other vehicle,
attorney Daniel Morrison, makes the worst decision possible—he runs. What
starts as a moment of panic quickly turns into a state-wide manhunt when
Claudia’s husband, the corrupt and power-hungry congressional candidate Hayden
Grant, offers a cool million for Morrison’s head—dead or alive. And let’s just
say, in Texas, there’s no shortage of people who are happy to test out that
“dead” option first.
With bounty hunters, law enforcement, rogue journalists, and
half the gun-wielding population of Texas hot on his tail, Morrison’s flight is
nothing short of chaotic. But the real show-stealer here is Roya Navarro, a
relentless and no-nonsense San Antonio detective who refuses to let this case
spiral into vigilante madness.
Bridges does a fantastic job of pulling the reader straight
into the tension-filled chase, making every close call, desperate escape, and
gunfight pulse with adrenaline. The pacing is relentless, which is good for me
as I tend to lose focus if a book doesn’t grab me immediately. The author
manages to develop rich, layered characters—Morrison is flawed but human, Grant
is sinisterly slick, and Navarro is the kind of detective you want on your
side. The dialogue is razor-sharp, the action is cinematic, and the stakes just
keep rising with every page.
Fast-paced, a touch of dark humor -or was that just me- and brimming with tension, If you love thrillers with a Texas-sized dose of mayhem, this one’s a must-read. Just be warned—you might find yourself double-checking your rearview mirror when you're done.
